What do we need to tell you before the shoot?
We need to know in advance what kind of shoot you would like, number of people involved, any particular props you would like to include, etc. Also let us know if you have any specific requirements for the shoot, such as wheelchair accessibility, etc. We also like to know the names/ages of family members and/or other participants in advance.
How long does the photo shoot session last?
The actual shoot depends on which package you have chosen. For example for a one-hour session, the last photograph will taken 60 minutes or longer after the first photograph to ensure you get a full session. As our sessions are a block, moving, walking and/or transport time is included in the session time. Usually we like to meet with our clients about 5 minutes before the shoot to have a quick chat and to setup and consider the surroundings.
Where will the photos be taken?
Usually, outside. If you don’t have a specific request for a location, we can suggest a location based on what you had in mind, such as nature, tradition, urban, etc. Ideally we like to use natural light, because we believe it helps to create the most beautiful photos. Our photo shoot packages are for locations in central Tokyo (approximately within the Yamanote Line circle), however we can also go further upon request. Depending on the location, it will incur an extra fee for time and transportation. Some of our favorite locations for shoots include Asakusa, Kagurazaka, Ginza, Yurakucho, Hamarikyu Garden and Koishikawa Botanical Garden.
Will images from my session be shown as part of a portfolio?
Yes. We sometimes like to show a few photos from sessions as part of our portfolio as well as on our Facebook and Instagram pages. Names and locations are never disclosed to protect your privacy. If you prefer us not to use the photos, please let us know prior to the shoot. We usually ask all our clients for their ok with this, so please let us know if there is any issue.
What if I'm late for the shoot?
As we often have other commitments on one day, we do rely on a reasonably prompt starting time for our sessions. If the client is late, we either charge a late fee of ¥1000 for every 15 minutes delay, or alternatively the time is taken away from the shooting time (the agreed fee will remain).
If you plan to bring a stroller/pram, please note that elevator exits from metro stations are complex and can delay travel significantly, so please allow ample time to arrive at your destination.
We recommend aiming to arrive at the meeting point 5 minutes before your session. Please be on time! Thank you for your understanding.
What if it’s raining on the day of my shoot?
In the case of forecasted rain, usually we see what is happening on the day as often the weather changes unexpectedly in Tokyo. In the case of light rain, we will try to change the location to more of a sheltered spot, and in the case of unstoppable torrential rain we will reschedule for another day. We try to make the best of the weather — If it’s sunny we try to use the sun light as a feature of the images; if it is cloudy it is sometimes better as the clouds act as a natural diffuser; and if it’s raining lightly it can also be nice with umbrellas as props. Sorry, we do not accept cancellations if the weather isn’t exactly what you want. It is the weather!
What should we wear?
When will we receive our photos?
Usually within 2-5 days. In the case of a wedding, it may take longer due to the amount of photos.
What is the final product? Will we get prints or digital files?
We can arrange prints or a printed album for you at an additional cost.
Do you provide video service?
Currently we do not, however if such a service is required we can arrange it for you with a small introduction fee.
Are digital files watermarked?
No. We provide images to our clients without our watermark, so you are free to use them as you please.
Do you provide an online gallery?
Yes, we do. It’s a temporary gallery to make it easy to view, select and/or download images from.
Do you teach or give workshops?
Yes! Please get in touch!
Can you help us arrange our wedding? We don’t speak Japanese!
Unfortunately we are just mere photographers! We can partner you with a wedding events company and an interpreter if necessary with a small introduction fee.
Do you have a hair and makeup service?
Unfortunately no, however we can point you in the right direction for hair and makeup.
Do you also do studio shots?
We do studio photography usually just for products, rather than people. We prefer to get outside!
Can you travel outside of Tokyo for my shoot?
Our usual radius is within the Yamanote (train line) circle of Tokyo, however we can travel further with an additional fee to cover transport and extra travel time.
How about Kyoto? Karuizawa? Hakodate? We are often able to combine a shoot with other work completely outside of Tokyo, so please ask as it might be possible. Minimum session time for remote locations is 2 hours.
Can I use the photos from my session for my business?
The photos are for personal use, rather than commercial purposes. You are welcome to share them with your family and friends, however they are not to be used for commercial purposes. Please discuss the situation with us if you are in doubt. Let us know if you would like to do a session for commercial purposes and we will give you an estimate.
Additionally, Spicer & Naoi Photography images cannot be sold for any purpose.

What if my location has an admission fee?

Is transport or walking during the shoot included in the session time?
Yes. If you choose two locations, the transport time is included. In addition, walking from spot to spot during the shoot is also included in the time frame. We often try to capture some candid moments during this “moving” time. If you do not want to do any walking, please tell us in advance and we will try to minimize the photography points. Different spots tend to be a short distance away from each other. Please also be aware that with children the walking pace tends to be slower than normal. We try our hardest to maximize the time of the shoot, however in order to provide some different perspectives some walking is usually required.
Who will be shooting my session?
Either Ippei, Janine, or Sam. Sometimes we can decide who the photographer will be right away, and other times we will let you know depending on our respective schedules.
I've downloaded my photos but now I can't find them. Can you send them to me again?
Since we have a large amount of shoots, we won’t be able to back up all photos so please be sure to download and save your images securely. If it’s within 6 months of your shoot, we may still have a few of the highlights, however unfortunately it won’t be all of them. We cannot take responsibility for the storage of your photographs, so please make sure they are downloaded and backed up.
What can I do with my bags/luggage/stroller during the shoot?
It is always the most productive of sessions where clients do not bring luggage or bags, however we understand that somethings it is inevitable. We can either suggest a locker where you can store you luggage/bags during the shoot, or if you bring it with you we will manage by putting it aside during actual shooting. For strollers or prams, it is best not to bring one however we understand that this is also sometimes inevitable. They can also be put aside during actual shooting, however please note that elevator exits from metro stations are complex and can delay travel significantly, so please allow ample time to arrive at your destination.
Can you make me thinner in the photos?
No, we are photographers rather than photoshop retouchers. We can delete basic spots for example, however we cannot alter your shape. If you really feel the need to have the images retouched there are multiple high level online services which specialize in this. We encourage you to be proud of yourself, and leave the images as they are 🙂
I need to cancel my session. What should I do?
We are sorry to hear that! It’s ok to cancel however please note that we ask for a deposit to secure your session and that deposit is non-refundable. Thank you for your understanding.
